One of the things I love most about Charleston is that there is always something in bloom! You can find camellias in winter and crepe myrtles during summer, but spring is when it feels like nature’s grandest art show. Spring in Charleston is bursting with colorful blossoms, sweet floral scents, and mild temperatures, making it the perfect time to be outside. While Charleston’s flowers put on a show year-round, spring is truly the star of the show. With azaleas, jasmine, wisteria, and Peggy Martin Roses, there is no shortage of beautiful blooms
If you’re visiting Charleston in the spring, wanting to plan a family photoshoot or spring engagement session, or just looking for the best places to soak in the blooms, here’s what you need to see!
Azaleas
Azaleas are the unofficial floral mascot of spring in Charleston, with their fluffy pink, purple, red, and white blossoms brightening up parks, gardens, and even the most unexpected corners of the city. These are one of my favorite spring flowers and the wild bushes can grow quite large! If you love azaleas like me then Middleton Place is an absolute must-visit in the spring. They have an entire “Azalea Hillside” with thousands of bushes in bloom. Other great spots where you’ll find azaleas include Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, Hampton Park, and White Point Garden.
Jasmine
Nothing says “spring in Charleston” quite like the scent of jasmine filling the air. This climbing vine with tiny white flowers transforms the city, climbing up walls and fences. If you’re wandering downtown, keep an eye out for jasmine. Even places like Taco Boy and residential streets are wrapped in these fragrant vines. I love it so much that I even planted jasmine at my home just to enjoy that scent all season long!
Wisteria
If you see a cascading curtain of purple flowers draped over a garden gate or fence, you’ve found wisteria! This dramatic climbing vine attracts thousands of visitors, influencers, and photographers every year, all hoping to capture its storybook beauty. It’s truly a showstopper, making spots all over downtown look like they belong in a fairy tale.
Peggy Martin Roses
Peggy Martin Roses are not just beautiful—they have an incredible story. This climbing pink rose survived Hurricane Katrina after being submerged in 20 feet of water for two weeks! As a result, these gorgeous pink flowers have come to symbolize resilience and hope. (You can read more about their story here.) You’ll find these gorgeous, historic roses blooming in Hampton Park, Colonial Lake, and throughout downtown.
Spring is the Perfect Time for Photos
With so many beautiful blooms painting the Charleston landscape, spring is one of the best times for portraits in Charleston! Whether you’re looking for engagement photos, family pictures, or even planning a spring wedding, there’s no shortage of stunning locations and picturesque backdrops. At the very least, get outside and enjoy the flowers and the milder weather before the hot summer arrives!
