Charleston family photos with iconic cobblestone streets

Charleston is one of the most beautiful places for family photos, with its mix of historic charm, coastal scenery, and lush green spaces. Whether you’re visiting on vacation or live here year-round, choosing the right location can make all the difference in how your photos look and feel. Here are my top 5 family photo locations in Charleston, SC, as well as what I consider when helping families choose a family photo location.

What I Consider When Choosing a Family Photo Location

When I help families choose a location, I’m thinking about more than just what looks pretty. I’m considering how the space will work for your family and your experience during the session.

The Light

Light is everything when it comes to photography. I look for locations that offer a mix of sun and shade so we can create soft, flattering images no matter the conditions.

Safety

Safety is always a priority, but this is especially important for families with young children. I consider things like road traffic, crime, open spaces, and even those sneaky Southern ant hills! I prefer locations with room for kids to move, run, and play as that always makes sessions more relaxed and fun.

Parking

The last thing you want to worry about before your session is where to park, which is why I always provide my families with easy, convenient parking options ahead of time.

Beauty

While you are always the focus, Charleston’s natural backdrop can elevate your portraits to the next level. Whether you are on vacation or live in Charleston, you want to capture the beauty of the Lowcountry – the oak trees draped in Spanish moss, the beach at sunset, or the pastel colored rainbow row houses. Each of the beautiful backdrops will enhance your portraits!

Variety

I love locations that offer a lot of variety, whether color, texture, or backdrop, within a short distance. This allows us to capture several different looks without a lot of walking or travel, which is especially helpful with little ones.

With these considerations in mind, there are few areas in Charleston that I tend to gravitate to as they check all the boxes!

Top 5 Family Photo Locations in Charleston

1. Hampton Park

Hampton Park is one of my favorite spots for family photos in Charleston. It offers the perfect combination of wide open space and beautiful natural scenery. There are massive oak trees covered in Spanish moss, which make for the most beautiful backdrops. You’ll also find seasonal flowers in bloom and an abundance of greenery. Hampton Park also offers plenty of room for kids to run and play, which is a huge plus! Its location near downtown makes it convenient, while still feeling peaceful and spacious. I love photographing families here  in the spring when everything is in bloom!

2. White Point Garden

Located in the heart of historic downtown Charleston, White Point Garden is a classic and timeless location.

This park features huge oak trees that provide tons of shade and coverage, making it a great option for hot summer sessions or days with light rain. There is also a charming gazebo that can be utilized. The location in historic downtown is convenient as it is close to colorful houses, and as an added bonus there are beautiful water views of the Charleston Harbor and historic architecture nearby, providing lots of variety to final galleries.

3. The Beach: Isle of Palms or Folly Beach

The beach is always a family favorite, especially for kids! There’s something about the sand and waves that brings out natural joy and playfulness. The setting naturally lends itself to a more relaxed vibe and the best candid portraits. My two favorite beach spots near Charleston are Isle of Palms and Folly Beach!

For beach sessions, we typically start on the dunes pathways, where there’s shade from palm trees and sea grass. Then, we move to the beach for pictures with the water and sunset sky. We usually see the most beautiful cotton candy sunsets, which makes for a picturesque backdrop to family photos.

Beach photo tip: Bring an extra set of clothes, because it’s always fun to end a session with dipping toes in the waves!

4. Waterfront Park

Waterfront Park is one of Charleston’s most iconic photo locations, thanks to the famous Pineapple Fountain and beautiful harbor views. In addition, it also offers beautiful Oak trees, views of the Ravenel Bridge, and is near downtown and Rainbow Row, so there is historic architecture and tons of variety too!

The only downside to Waterfront Park is that it can attract a lot of people visiting the Pineapple Fountain, and therefore it can be busy. However, with the right timing, it’s a stunning spot for family photos.

5. Historic Downtown Charleston

If you love the classic Charleston look, downtown is full of charm around every corner. I absolutely love capturing families in this historic area! The pastel colored homes provide a new backdrop every few steps, and the quintessential cobblestone streets are always a favorite spot! Since the cobblestone streets can be hard to walk and drive on, there aren’t as many cars whizzing by.  However, this area can be harder for families with toddlers who like to run and play, but is great for families with babies and older kids.

Choosing the Best Charleston Location for Your Family

Every family is different, and the best location depends on your style,  the ages of your kids, and the overall feel you want for your photos. If you picture a more playful, relaxed session with lots of candids, the beach might be the perfect place. Envisioning a natural setting with greenery and colorful flowers in bloom, then Hampton Park would be a great fit! I always work with all my families to ensure we select the right sport for their family and session vision, whether it’s one of these top 5 family photo locations in Charleston or somewhere completely different, I will look at all the considerations and make sure it provides everything we need to have the best session!

No matter which location you choose, Charleston offers a beautiful backdrop to capture your family just as you are in this season of life.
